    L.I.F.E. Group

Living in Friendship with the Earth (LIFE) Group is an older girl group open to Cadettes and up, established in the early 1980’s to promote environmental awareness, based out of Camp Wendy. Members would attend several outings a year, often taking environmental trainings, providing service like helping rebuild trails, team building excursions like ropes courses and planning and leading an outdoor environmental awareness day “Wonders of Wendy” each year. It’s been rebooted several times, always with the mission of providing older girls with leadership, outdoor education and adventure based experiences. Know some girls that would be interested? We are always looking for new members, email LIFE@friendsofwendy.org for more info!

What would Juliette think about NMK?

You may have heard of NKF, or Newmark Knight Frank, the firm that helped GSHH put together their real estate plan.  Newmark (they dropped the Knight Frank in 2020) is a commercial real estate services firm owned by a large wholesale brokerage firm. What does this mean? Newmark is a business that helps other businesses make more money (or stop losing money) by buying, selling, or managing properties.  Businesses pay Newmark money (a lot of money) to help themselves make even MORE money. Is that bad? Not at all! Businesses exist to make money by providing something of value to their customers.  However, Girl Scouts does not follow this model. …

    Who was Marion Borden?

Marion Borden (Halliday) born March 9, 1883 was heiress to the Borden Company, of Elsie the cow fame. Her family established the Home Farm in Wallkill, NY in the early 1880s, developing the farm and infrastructure of the local area. In 1891, her father died at only 47 and it was his wish that Marion be left the Home Farm when she reached of legal age. She did become president of the Borden company, actively running it, unusual in a time where women did not yet have the right to vote. Marion loved technology and submitted several patents over her lifetime for various inventions. In 1906, at the age of…

    Wendy Quilt

Joanne (aka Hawkeye) designed and made a quilt based on Camp Wendy. The tent and the Poppy Tree were designed as a project for the staff reunion in 2012 (She over estimated what non-quilters could do!) Most blocks were based on photos She took during the reunion. Thank you for sharing!

    The Poppy Book

My Silver Award, as you might recall, was to restore an older pamphlet from the 70’s for modern audiences, and to update it to include recent history. This pamphlet was called The Poppy Book. Poppy is a fairy who lives in a massive tree just to the right of the main gate into Camp Wendy. This tree is at least two hundred years old, and it would take eight little Brownies to reach around the whole trunk. This tree was ancient, even when Camp Wendy was founded almost a hundred years ago. The pamphlet follows the story of Poppy throughout Wendy’s rich history, and includes pictures taken at the camp…
