Camp Wendy Turns 100 this Year!
Happy Birthday, Camp Wendy! This historic camp, themed after the fairy tale of Peter Pan turns 100. In 1923 Marion Borden, of Borden Dairy provided land for the Girl Scouts of Ulster County to camp. That property became Camp Wendy, serving thousands of Girl Scouts over the last hundred years. Efforts are underway to restore this gem, so reach out if you can help. Also, save the date for a celebration – September 29- October 1. Plans are being made for an Alumni event, Girl event, and a Gala. We hope you can come celebrate with us, volunteer or be there in spirit! Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson are…

Lou Henry Hoover and the Girl Scouts
Juliette Low invested Lou Henry Hoover as a Girl Scout in 1917. From then until the end of her life, Lou Henry Hoover was actively engaged in the Girl Scout movement. She was a leader of Troop 8 in Washington, D.C. for ten years; a council member in Palo Alto, California; Chairman of the Girl Scout National Board of Directors; twice elected President of the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A.; and honorary president when her husband was President of the United States. Although she was interested in all of Girl Scouting, the out-of-doors was her special love. An expert and enthusiastic camper, she was eager for all girls to experience…

L.I.F.E. Group
Living in Friendship with the Earth (LIFE) Group is an older girl group open to Cadettes and up, established in the early 1980’s to promote environmental awareness, based out of Camp Wendy. Members would attend several outings a year, often taking environmental trainings, providing service like helping rebuild trails, team building excursions like ropes courses and planning and leading an outdoor environmental awareness day “Wonders of Wendy” each year. It’s been rebooted several times, always with the mission of providing older girls with leadership, outdoor education and adventure based experiences. Know some girls that would be interested? We are always looking for new members, email LIFE@friendsofwendy.org for more info!

Who was Marion Borden?
Marion Borden (Halliday) born March 9, 1883 was heiress to the Borden Company, of Elsie the cow fame. Her family established the Home Farm in Wallkill, NY in the early 1880s, developing the farm and infrastructure of the local area. In 1891, her father died at only 47 and it was his wish that Marion be left the Home Farm when she reached of legal age. She did become president of the Borden company, actively running it, unusual in a time where women did not yet have the right to vote. Marion loved technology and submitted several patents over her lifetime for various inventions. In 1906, at the age of…

Wendy Quilt
Joanne (aka Hawkeye) designed and made a quilt based on Camp Wendy. The tent and the Poppy Tree were designed as a project for the staff reunion in 2012 (She over estimated what non-quilters could do!) Most blocks were based on photos She took during the reunion. Thank you for sharing!

Archery at Wendy
Over the last three weekends, volunteers have run four sold out events. This contradicts the assumption that the GSHH Board has made about how Wendy is under utilized. Our girls in Ulster, Dutchess, Sullivan and Orange County need this space. Today, despite the weather and temperatures we had so much fun with archery and booked up all the available time slots!

Princess Pine, Rare & Vulnerable Native Plant
The Princess Pine, also known as clubmoss or ground pine, found in the climax forest of the Romany unit of Camp Wendy, is a protected plant in New York State. It may not yet be endangered, but it is still at risk. This tiny pine, slowly growing only six inches tall, is native to New York State and the Northeastern USA and Canada. It’s just one of the many special plants that can be found at Wendy and my personal favorite. All plants enumerated on the lists of endangered species in subdivision: (a) Of this section, threatened species in subdivision (b) Of this section, rare species in subdivision (c) Of…
